How to get AI captions into Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve
By the Samsaam team · Published · Updated · 4 min read
There are two ways to bring captions into Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve: import an SRT file to get an editable caption track (text and timing, styled in your editor), or import an overlay video — captions on a transparent (alpha) or green background — to keep the animation exactly as designed. Choose SRT for flexibility, an overlay for animated creator-style captions.
Option 1: SRT caption track
- In Samsaam, generate and correct the captions, then download SRT.
- Premiere Pro: File → Import the .srt, drag it onto the timeline; it becomes a caption track you can restyle in the Essential Graphics / captions panel.
- DaVinci Resolve: import the .srt into the Media Pool and drag it onto the timeline as a subtitle track; style it in the subtitle inspector.
SRT keeps text and timing only — no animation. Export it from the same project as your video edit so timings line up (trim edits after import will shift them).
Option 2: animated overlay (alpha or green screen)
- Style the captions in Samsaam with any animated template.
- Export with a transparent background (alpha channel, Team plan) or on a green screen (Creator and Team).
- Place the overlay on a track above your footage. For green screen, apply your editor’s chroma keyer (Ultra Key in Premiere, 3D Keyer in Resolve).
Overlays preserve every animation exactly, which is the fastest way to get After Effects-style captions into an NLE edit.
Which should you choose?
| Need | Use |
|---|---|
| Edit caption text inside the NLE | SRT |
| Keep animated creator-style captions | Alpha or green-screen overlay |
| Upload a caption track to YouTube too | SRT (or VTT) |
| Smallest file | SRT |
