How to add animated captions to a video

By the Samsaam team · Published · 5 min read

To add animated captions, generate a word-timed transcript, apply an animated caption style that reveals words as they are spoken, check the words and placement, then render the video. With an AI caption tool the whole process takes a few minutes; by hand in a motion-design app it can take hours.

1. Start with clean audio

Caption accuracy follows audio quality. Record close to the mic, away from fans and traffic. If the recording is noisy, re-record closer to the mic when you can — clean source audio is the cheapest accuracy win there is.

2. Generate word-level captions

Animated captions need a timestamp for every word, not just every line — that is what lets a word pop exactly when it is said. Upload the video to an AI caption generator that produces word-level timing, and choose the spoken language (and, for languages like Hindi or Urdu, the script).

3. Choose an animation style that matches the video

Video typeStyle that worksWhy
Fast talking-head ShortWord by word, bouncy popKeeps pace with delivery and holds attention
Educational explainerStacked lines with one emphasised wordReadable, and the key term sticks
Hook or ad openerBig kinetic headlineStops the scroll
Interview or podcastMinimal fade, or important captionsDoesn’t compete with faces
Visual / B-roll heavyImportant captionsKeeps the frame clean

Samsaam has 30+ templates and 40+ entrance and exit animations you can change per caption.

4. Fix words, line breaks and emphasis

  • Correct names, brands and slang — these are the words AI most often mishears.
  • Break lines at natural pauses; never split a name across two captions.
  • Keep lines short on vertical video: one to four words.
  • Emphasise one word per line at most. If everything is highlighted, nothing is.

5. Place captions where the platform won’t cover them

On TikTok, Reels and Shorts the bottom of the frame and the right edge hold the caption text, username and buttons. Keep captions in the middle band — roughly between 35% and 70% of the frame height. For landscape YouTube video, a single line in the lower third is standard.

6. Export

Render the captioned video at the platform’s resolution (1080×1920 for vertical). If you finish the edit elsewhere, export an overlay or subtitle file instead — see exporting captions for Premiere Pro and DaVinci Resolve.
